​Safety & Caring for Your Indian Agate

​Indian Agate is a variety of Chalcedony, making it a very durable and “hard” gemstone (6.5–7 on the Mohs scale). However, the artisanal stringing requires mindful care.

​1. Gentle Cleaning ​The Golden Rule: Use only warm, soapy water and a soft cloth. ​Avoid Chemicals: Stay away from jewelry “dips,” ammonia, or bleach. Agate is porous; chemicals can seep into the micro-fissures and cause discoloration or “clouding” over time. ​Dry Thoroughly: Ensure the silk or nylon thread is completely dry before storing to prevent the string from stretching or rotting. ​2. Protecting the Glow ​Sunlight Sensitivity: While Agate is generally stable, prolonged exposure to intense, direct sunlight (like leaving it on a windowsill) can cause the vibrant orange sections to fade slightly over the years. Store in a dark, cool place. ​Cosmetic Safety: Apply lotions, perfumes, and oils before putting on your jewelry. Agate can absorb oils from the skin and products, which may alter its translucency. ​3.
